COVID-19-Athletic Updates

The Officers of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), voted to delay the official start date of the Fall 2020 sports season, cancel the Fall 2020 Regional and State Championships and prepare to implement a condensed season schedule in January 2021 if high school sports remain prohibited throughout 2020 due to COVID-19. At this time there have been decisions regarding modified (middle school) athletics. This decision comes at the recommendation of the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 Task Force when they convened as a working group for the third time July 16, 2020.

The NYSPHSAA Officers’ decision includes:

• Delay Fall sports start date until Monday, September 21st (NYSPHSAA PAUSE)

Health Information-Fall Athletics 2020-21

During these challenging times there are many questions that still need to be answered especially as it relates to interscholastic athletics for the 2020-21 school year. A this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact that it is having on interscholastic athletics, our health care providers and as per the guidance from NYSED please be informed of the following:

  • Permit student athletes in grades 7-12 (as of September 2020) to participate in the fall 2020 sports season if they have previously had a health examination for school attendance in the 2018-2019 or 2019-2020 school years and provide a health history completed (Form B), and Interval Health History for Athletics (Form D) which is signed by the parent/guardian within 30 days of the start of the season. NYSED will provide updated information as needed.
  • Student athletes who have not previously had a health examination must still obtain a health examination prior to participation in the fall 2020 sports season. At this time, students should plan to obtain the required health examination prior to participation in the winter or spring 2020-21 seasons, although that may change depending on the status of COVID-19 in the fall.
  • Beginning January 31, 2021 – (although that may change depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall) - physical examinations for school are to be documented on the NYS Required Health Examination Form or an electronic health record equivalent form. Medical examinations may be scheduled at any time during the school year. The examination should indicate the category or categories of interscholastic athletics in which the student may participate: contact/collision, limited contact, non-contact. The physical examination for interscholastic athletics is valid for qualifying a student's participation for a period of 12 continuous months- through the last day of the month in which the exam was conducted and through the entire sports season, even if the exam’s expiration is before the season is complete.

We suggest you make copies of the completed forms for your own records before sending them to the school health office.  Forms can be accessed at:  https://hwbulldogs.com/main/otherad/contentID/47512115 or by contacting the nurse’s office at your child’s respective building.
